How to choose the perfect rug for any room in your home.

Determining the ideal rug size and construction type for your space is not an exact science. The type of room and furniture placement will factor into your decision as well as your lifestyle and personal preferences.

What room are you shopping for?

Consider the primary purpose of your room and what room this rug will live in. Is it a high-traffic area like a living room or a quieter space like a bedroom? This will help determine the appropriate material, pattern and color of the rug.

Fiber


Wool	We love natural wool since it is a sustainable fiber but also durable, naturally stain resistant, fire-resistant, and easy to care for with pets. Perfect for high-traffic areas yet, still soft underfoot.
Viscose	This yarn is easily saturated with dye and produces wonderful vibrant color and has a soft luxurious feel. This is fiber best suited for low-traffic areas like a bedroom.
Jute	Jute is a very durable fiber that can withstand high traffic areas and has minimal shedding. These natural fibers are not the best choice if your pet likes to dig and scratch. Being a more absorbent fiber, these will not be ideal for bathroom or kitchen-sink placements.
Reycled PET Polyester	We make many of our hand-woven, indoor/outdoor rugs with polyester made from recycled plastic bottles. Not only is this great for the environment, but the yarns feel like wool, are color-fast, extremely versatile and oh so easy to care for.
Solution-Dyed Polyester	We love using solution-dyed polyester yarns to design beautiful rugs for your floor–both indoors and out. We hand spin the yarns with many colors to create a watercolor effect from one shade to the next. Each rug is unique artwork for your floor—and oh-so-easy to care for!

Construction


Hand-Tufted Cut Pile	Crafted by loops of yarn that are pushed through a backing imprinted with the rug’s overall design. The loops are then sheared to create the pile.
Hand-Tufted Loop Pile	Crafted by loops of yarn that are pushed through a backing imprinted with the rug’s overall design.
Hand-Knotted	The most labor-intensive rug construction, each strand of yarn is tied to the warp to create beautiful, intricate designs. Our all-natural wool hand-knotted rugs are true masterpieces for your floor.
Hand-Woven Soumak	One of the world’s oldest weaving techniques, Soumak weaving produces a unique chain stitched appearance while providing pliable strength and luxurious softness.
Hand-Loomed	Created by interlacing horizontal and vertical lying yarns held by a wooden loom, resulting in plush rugs underfoot.
Flatwoven	These rugs have little to no pile height, laying flat on the ground adding color to a space without creating tripping hazards or impeding entry doors. They can be lightweight and require a pad to reduce sliding.

Step 1: Start with a Floor Plan

The first step is to always measure the floor, and not rely on a visual "eyeball" of the space. A 5’x 8’ rug will look very different dimensionally on a rug rack or displayed in a showroom than it will in your home.

Choose a room layout and measure for your new rug based on the space you’d like to fill.

Here are some sample layouts that may work for your space.

When selecting a room size rug for the dining room, you need to measure the length and width of your table. Don’t forget to include the table leaf if you use it frequently.

Allow at least 24" to 30" of rug beyond the tabletop on each side. This ensures chairs can be moved in and out, and that all seating rests on the rug once the meal is served.

For visual interest, a round rug is a great choice for either a round or square table. Use the guide above to determine the best size rug for your dining room.

How do I find the right style for my space?

Ask yourself: is this rug the main character or more of a supporting role? A bold rug can make a statement and serve as the focal point to build a room around using the pattern, style or color. A more subtle rug can complement existing rugs or decor to create a cohesive look. It’s important to choose a rug that fits your personal taste and style. Intuition plays a big role here. It’s important to not allow what is trendy overshadow a rug that speaks to you.

Next, consider what feeling the room should have. Some people want their family room to have bold colors to add energy and hide any of life’s imperfections, but in a bedroom, a calming color or pattern after a busy day might be the right choice.
